Give yourself permission to take a break from daily life for the opportunity to explore and understand the impact of grief from both living and death losses. Find affirmation for your grief. Connect with others. Allow space for self-inquiry, personal growth, and lasting well-being.
ABOUT REFRAMING GRIEF
During this three-day, three-night experience, you will gather with others in a safe space where all of your self and your grief are wholeheartedly welcome. Together, we will learn more about how loss and grief affect our lives, relationships, and sense of self. Through gatherings, exercises, activities, and mind-body work, we will find solace, self-compassion, and inspiration to cultivate hope, grace, and new awareness within the realm of grief. Allow yourself to open to the deep power of grieving as a path to true healing, integration, and transformation.
Together, we will explore how we can tend to personal and collective grief, joy, and imagination while enduring in times of trouble. This weekend will intentionally create space and time to foster personal openings through individual and collective practices such as guided meditation; group discussion; ritual; somatic and land-based practices; and personal reflection. We will question and practice what it means to grieve, love, and belong –to ourselves, to each other, and to the land around us.
In addition to scheduled group activities, there will be personal time for participants to rest, journal, explore the area, or do whatever else calls to them. Retreat is an intentional coming away from daily activities, to slow down and notice what might be surfacing from within when we take the time to rest, reflect, and step outside of everyday life.
Facilitated By
Lori Krause and Jen Belfield provide a safe, compassionate environment for deep emotional work. Each phase of the retreat is carefully designed to help participants connect with their own inner healing power. The group support unleashes this strength in a way that is unique from one-on-one work. The power of intentional loving creates a secure, safe container for people to do the work they desire.
We invite you to lean in with us as we learn how to grieve in community. There is no grief too big or too small to be worthy of welcome here.

Jen Belfield
Certified Pilates Teacher AND Integrative Nutrition Health Coach
“My experience with Jen has been nothing less than remarkable. First, she is an excellent professional whose enthusiasm and confidence is based on her solid training and experience. She demonstrated her sensitivity to my physical limitations by focusing on my weaknesses while also improving my strengths. Jen is quick, smart, and insightful. Don’t get me wrong, she is no pushover… she challenges her clients and knows what each body needs.”
I have, for most of my life, been a student of the human body and mind, and of people in general. I love knowing what makes myself and other people tick, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Having worked in the corporate world and with the public for over 30 years, I have encountered all types of personalities in myriad situations and have been keenly aware of how people respond to different stimuli. What always fascinates me the most is the effect our experiences, environments, choices, habits, lifestyles, feelings, and thoughts have on our bodies.
This led me in 2011 to leave the corporate world and become a Certified Pilates Teacher, focusing on the mind-body connection and helping others not only improve their posture, alignment, and physical fitness but also become continually aware of their own bodies and the messages their bodies communicate in daily life. The mind and body are not separate entities; I relish each opportunity to help people recognize this connection and become more integrated and whole in the process.
I teach Pilates with a primary focus on injury rehabilitation/prevention, as well as somatic experiencing for nervous system regulation. I am also an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and enjoy guiding others in making good, holistic choices for their continued well-being.
I am originally from the Los Angeles/San Diego area but recently moved to the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. I am loving the four seasons and learning about exercising at a higher altitude! In my spare time, if I am not cooking at home or reading ferociously, I love to hike or go climbing with my beloved partner, Steve, and our two dogs, Zoe and Teddy.

Lori Krause
Death Doula and Grief Specialist
“Lori’s an extraordinary coach and it’s a privilege to work with her. During a time of significant loss in my life, Lori continues to provide a safe and compassionate space for me to not only explore but also lean into my grief journey. She has a gentle and respectful way of asking me questions that help me get to the core of my experience. At the same time, she reflects the progress I continue to make back to me and helps me tap into my deepest strength. Although much of Lori’s expertise and professional focus is on grief and loss, I’d say her specialty and true gift is in giving others hope.”
Grief is a deeply personal journey. It deserves a limitless exploration to breathe, be expressed, and to be given movement. My commitment to bringing greater awareness to and literacy around loss and grief has created the opportunity to work with individuals, families, and communities to reshape their loss to empower their future. It is the light that guides Hand Holders.
My unwavering belief in the beauty of community, connection, and compassion enhanced by my personal experience with loss is what led me to serve others as a death doula, grief specialist, and advocate for growth. I am an INELDA-trained End of Life Doula and have my professional coaching credential (PCC) with the ICF as an End of Life and Grief Coach. I am also an experienced bereavement support group facilitator for both adults and children. I work closely with nonprofit organizations and companies to provide group support sessions, workshops, and one-on-one services.
I am originally from West Bloomfield, Michigan, and have called San Diego, California home for nearly 25 years. I am a photographer, baker, and aficionado of all things mid-century design and art deco. I love spending time with my husband, Brian; our fur baby, Mazzie; and my loved ones.

Who is this retreat for?
What should I expect?
Whether you are facing complicated grief, anticipatory grief, or are simply looking to create meaningful rituals to commemorate your loss, you will find that a grief retreat can be an empowering step forward. Communal grief rituals are about reaching for each other to find the courage and support required to face what needs tending, keep our hearts open, and return us to what matters most. By listening to others, we learn to articulate what often feels inexpressible. In this space, we aim to destigmatize grief, metabolize it, and move away from the idea that grief is pathological. This is a chance to regulate our nervous systems in community and be reminded that we are not alone.
Intense and difficult emotions are often stored in the body, and remain there until they are acknowledged, processed, and released. Our bodies keep a record of our lives, and have many important messages for us when we slow down and listen. When we tune into our physical body, we discover where we are stuck and become more aware of how we feel, in a way other than we are used to. We can identify and acknowledge our feelings of sadness, anger, fear, etc. by checking in with our muscles, joints, and bodily sensations, encouraging these feelings and emotions to be fully expressed and liberated through movement and breath. Movement and awareness of the body can help us become “unstuck” and more integrated, leading us to a place of self-acceptance.
This is not group therapy so much as an opportunity to let the power of a loving group transform us and each other. The healing of our bodies and our hearts requires a new approach. As each person does their process work, the whole room transforms.
Reframing Grief is designed to be experiential and embodied, helping us move away from intellectualizing grief and instead stay rooted in our hearts and bodies as we navigate the unprocessed grief within us. Here, we create a space where grief can take any form—whether it is numbness, shame, rage, trembling, stillness, wailing, or something else.
The retreat will begin early Thursday evening and conclude after lunch on Sunday. The beginning of Reframing Grief will be about connection and safety; space will be created to work through grief, loss, and other difficult feelings we need to feel safe, supported, and welcomed. The initial activities aid in the transition from strangers to a close-knit community. We will enjoy our meals together; join in a circle and in small groups to share; and do simple group activities, such as talking circles, journaling, creativity, movement, practice in sacred listening, ceremony, and quiet time in nature.

FAQs
1. What do I need to bring?
Bring yourself and a desire to learn and grow. Additionally, we suggest the following:
- Hiking or running shoes with good traction (we will take gentle nature hikes).
- Comfortable clothing for our body work sessions – whatever works for YOU!
- Layers for warmth – although it will be summer, it gets cool in the mountains, especially after the sun goes down.
- A swimsuit – completely optional, but there is a hot tub at the cabin if you would like to partake!
2. How do I get there from the airport?
3. When should I arrive?
Ideally, we will welcome you to the cabin by 4:00pm MT. The cabin is about an hour from the airport, so it would be great if you arrive at Salt Lake City International no later than 3:00pm MT. Of course, if that is not possible, it is fine! We will make it work.
4. Which airport should I fly into?
Salt Lake City International has the most flights in and out. There is also Provo Regional Airport (closer to the cabin) but has fewer flights and MAY cost more, depending on your departure city.
5. Will you accommodate special dietary needs?
6. What if I need to cancel?
Please inform us by May 15, 2025 if you need to cancel. If we are notified by this date, we will refund your deposit less a 5% nonrefundable cancellation fee. Cancellation after May 15th may result in forfeiture of your entire deposit. Refunds after May 15th will be made only if your spot is re-booked at the same rate of initial booking. If a portion of your spot is re-booked, a pro-rata refund will be made. All refunds, whether in whole or pro-rata, will be subject to the nonrefundal 5% cancelation fee.
7. Is this retreat right for me?
A discovery call (on Zoom, about 25 minutes in length) is required to help you, Jen, and Lori decide if this retreat work is appropriate for you. You can reach us by sending a message with your phone number and the best times to call. We try to reply within 24 hours, except when leading retreats.
